Boise State Promotes Matthew Sterling to Associate Athletic Director
BOISE, Idaho – Boise State Athletics has promoted Matthew Sterling to Associate Athletic Director of Merchandise and Brand Operations.
In his new role, Sterling will oversee equipment and brand operations, including the department’s uniform and apparel strategy across all 18 sport programs and continue to serve as a key liaison to The Blue and Orange Store, the official merchandise provider for all athletics events. He will also add oversight of merchandising operations for the Boise State Sports & Entertainment Group and continue to develop new revenue opportunities through equipment, apparel, merchandise and collectibles.
Sterling’s role will continue to include working in partnership with Boise State University’s Trademarks and Licensing department to maintain brand standards and ensure the university’s marks are consistent across athletics apparel and merchandising. He serves as a secondary sport administrator for women’s soccer and is a member of the department’s senior staff administrative team.
“Matt is a Bar Raiser who has done great things for our overall operation,” said Boise State Athletic Director Jeramiah Dickey. “He’s an awesome teammate who has great attention to detail, leadership, and ability to execute at a high level. We’re grateful for how he has assisted with our transition to the Pac-12 Conference as well as the successful hand-painted football helmets and promotional campaigns. Having a strong brand is important to telling our story, and we’re excited to see Matt grow even more in this elevated role around building our brand even more!”
Sterling provided oversight into the department’s transition to new conference branding, helping coordinate uniform and apparel alignment across the department while maintaining the distinctive identity of the Broncos.
“Being part of Boise State Athletics and helping shape how we represent this university is an incredible opportunity,” Sterling said. “We have a very strong brand that is recognized around the world. My goal is to continue raising the standard across all 18 sports through elite service, alongside the best equipment ops team in the country. I am excited to identify new revenue streams to help Boise State compete for championships.”
Sterling joined Boise State Athletics in July 2023 as assistant athletic director of equipment operations.
Prior to joining Boise State Athletics, he served as head equipment manager of Olympic sports at William & Mary from 2022-23. He previously served as an equipment manager at the University of California from 2018-19 and spent two years at the University of Utah as assistant equipment manager of Olympic sports. From 2016-18, Sterling served in the U.S. Army.
Sterling holds a Master of Sports Business Administration from Grand Canyon University, a Master of Educational Psychology from Northern Arizona University and a Bachelor of Economy and Industry from the University of Arizona.
