Garden City will soon have another park, thanks in part to a land donation.
The Kissler family, which owns Norco, Inc., donated 1.2 acres on the southwest corner of Glenwood St. and Riverside Dr., which connects to the Greenbelt and Riverside Pond.
“Garden City has been an important part of our family’s history, and we wanted to give something back to the community that has meant so much to us,” Jim Kissler said in a news release. “We hope that this property becomes a place where families can gather, children can play, and future generations can enjoy the outdoors. We are pleased to partner with Garden City to make that possible.”
In a news release, the city said it plans to name the future park in honor of the Kissler family.
“This is an incredibly generous gift to the people of Garden City,” Mayor Bill Jacobs said in the news release. “As our community continues to grow, opportunities to acquire land for public parks become increasingly limited. The Kissler family’s generosity gives us a unique opportunity to create something special that will benefit residents and visitors for decades to come. We are deeply grateful for their commitment to Garden City.”
No word on when the park will open, but the city said it “envisions enhancing the property with beautiful new trees, including sequoias and other pines, helping create a distinctive, welcoming landscape that complements the pond, river, and Greenbelt setting,” adding that the planning “will include evaluating design concepts, potential amenities, development costs, and funding opportunities.”
