President Donald Trump has placed U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton at the center of a politically charged investigation into the late financier Jeffrey Epstein’s connections with high-profile Democrats, signaling a shift in prosecutorial priorities and raising questions about the independence of the United States Department of Justice.
Attorney General Pam Bondi announced that Clayton, as head of the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York (SDNY), will lead a new federal investigation into Epstein’s ties with prominent Democrats, including former President Bill Clinton, former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers, and entrepreneur/discussed donor Reid Hoffman, according to the Associated Press.
The announcement followed a public post by President Trump on his Truth Social platform, in which he directed Bondi and the Justice Department to probe Epstein’s relationships with “Bill Clinton, Larry Summers, Reid Hoffman, J.P. Morgan, Chase, and many other people and institutions, to determine what was going on with them, and him.”
