President Donald Trump on Tuesday promised “great nominees” will be announced on Wednesday for the Kennedy Center Honors, while adding a “whoops” and referring to the center by adding his name to it and promising the venue will experience a “major comeback” and renovations.
“GREAT Nominees for the TRUMP/KENNEDY CENTER, whoops, I mean, KENNEDY CENTER, AWARDS,” Trump posted on his Truth Social page. “They will be announced Wednesday. Tremendous work is being done, and money being spent, on bringing it back to the absolute TOP LEVEL of luxury, glamour, and entertainment. It had fallen on hard times, physically, BUT WILL SOON BE MAKING A MAJOR COMEBACK!!! President DJT”
Trump did not specify in his statement whether he will announce the nominees himself, or further detail what work is planned.
The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts has been a major venue for theater, dance, and music for decades, but Trump and administration officials say parts of the facility had been in decline in recent years.
Earlier this year, after criticizing the Kennedy Center’s choice of artists and the money that has been spent on the facility, Trump named himself as its chairman, added several White House officials and allies as board members, and named longtime aide Ric Grenell as its president.
In July, Rep. Bob Onder, R-Mo., introduced legislation to rename the center for Trump, designating the “John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts” as the “Donald J. Trump Center for the Performing Arts.”
