6.5 magnitude earthquake hits Idaho and aftershocks are expected

 

A 6.5 magnitude earthquake rocked central Idaho.

The USGS reports the earthquake struck near the small mountain town of Stanley. Reports flooded into our newsroom and on social media from all over the northwest including Canada.

The quake itself lasted anywhere between 20-30 seconds.

The Boise County Sheriff says it has received no reports of damage but large rocks on the highways were spotted last night.

A 4.6 earthquake aftershock at was reported at about 6:27 p.m. in the same area.

Firefighters say they spent some time checking area neighborhoods and Eagle and Meridian. They also encouraged homeowners to check their gas meters for any damage.
