COVID-19 Symptoms Similar to Allergies, Flu

COVID-19 has a laundry list of symptoms which makes it difficult for average Americans and even professional sports leagues to know when to quarantine. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, symptoms include fever, headaches, chills, cough, fatigue, muscle aches, congestion, runny nose, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. They also include loss of taste or smell, indicators which experts say are pretty well unique to COVID-19, although only 30% of patients have them.

According to The Wall Street Journal, many of the warning signs of the disease are hard to distinguish from other illnesses, such allergies, colds, or even eating a bad meal.

The National Football League has experienced a steady rise in COVID-19 cases among its players in recent weeks, and is struggling, like the rest of the U.S., to maintain its program during the pandemic.

According to the Journal, the league’s protocols include removing any player who has possible symptoms of the coronavirus.

“It’s a challenging medical situation,” said Dr. Allen Sills, a neurosurgeon who is the NFL’s Chief Medical Officer. “We always assume something is COVID until proven otherwise.”

Dr. Carlos del Rio, a professor of medicine at Emory University School of Medicine and an expert in global health and epidemiology, says that most of the symptoms — even fever, cough, and shortness of breath — of COVID-19 are common to other illnesses.

“The reality is that in the ER, in a clinic, we cannot tell them apart, and that’s why you have to test people,” he said, according to the Journal.

From Patriot to Punchline By Rick Worthington 9/3/20 Have you ever tried to do something good, but went about doing it the wrong way?
