Bill to restrict who can distribute an absentee ballot request form clears committee

Despite opposition from the state’s top election official, a bill restricting who can distribute absentee ballot forms cleared House State Affairs committee Tuesday morning.

The bill would only allow election officials to distribute those request forms.

CBS2 reports Rep. Kevin Andrus, the bill sponsor, said he feels strongly that no campaign or candidate should be distributing absentee request forms.

Those who testified against the bill say it would disproportionately harm college students and seniors in nursing homes.

Jason Lehosit with the Secretary of State’s office testified against the bill that this legislation gives more control to government, adds unneeded red tape and regulation to a process which has already been working.

Representatives Bruce Skuag and Vito Barbieri, voted with Rep. John Gannon, in a failed bid to kill the bill.

It now heads to the full House with a do-pass recommendation from the committee.
