More than 179,000 Idahoans are food insecure, expected to increase

More than one in every nine Idahoans will be food insecure at some point this year.

That’s more than 200,000 of your neighbors.

CBS2 reports Wednesday morning the Nampa Food Bank distributed boxes of food to people in need. A spokesperson for the city of Nampa said these distribution events usually have a large turnout and they are struggling to get enough volunteers to meet the demand.

The spokesperson said the food bank gave out around 1,500 boxes of food and depending on the day they have around 400 to 600 cars line up.

In Southwest Idaho, 10.8 percent of people were food insecure in 2020 which is one in nine people.

According to the food bank’s pandemic projections, around 12.2 percent of the population may experience food insecurity. That’s one in eight people.

On top of that, 33,420 children may experience food insecurity which is around one in seven people.

In the entire state, 179,580 people are food insecure.

The food bank projects that number could reach 202,390 people.

A spokesperson for the city of Nampa said they are still looking for more volunteers to help distribute food.
