Colder weather ahead for Treasure Valley

Spoiled with nice weather over the past several days, we’re now looking at some significant changes to the weather pattern later in the week. The first in a series of storm systems will move from the northwest into the area beginning today. The mist significant changes for midweek will be blustery winds Wednesday followed by chilly temperatures overnight.

A cold front will sweep through southwest Idaho Wednesday afternoon and evening generating blustery winds along the Treasure Valley. Sustained winds of 10-25 mph are expected with gusts of 30-40 mph. The strongest winds will be southeast of Boise from the Mountain Home area to the Magic Valley.

Cold air will move in from the north behind the front overnight and temperatures will likely plummet into the upper 20’s and low 30’s for the Treasure Valley. Our first hard freeze of the season is likely in some areas Thursday and Friday mornings as temperatures are forecast to remain well below average. Another round of cold air will arrive on Saturday. With this system, we’re expecting more moisture, and rain showers could transition over the snow showers sometime Saturday afternoon.

The storm is still far enough out that the timing and overall intensity of the weekend weather could alter quite a bit. However, if you’re excited about the potential for snowfall and are curious about how much snow we’re anticipating this early on, here goes. Generally, 4-8 inches of snow is expected above 6,000 feet. In our mountain valleys above 4,000 feet, we could see 2-5 inches of snow by early Sunday. Up to one inch is possible above 3,000 feet with just a trace, if any, possible in the Treasure Valley.
