Western Idaho fire nears 100,000 acres: ‘structure protection remains a top priority’

A large fire in western Idaho has burned nearly 100,000 acres Thursday, and has doubled in size since Monday.

The Woodhead fire has damaged 95,490 acres between Cambridge and the Oregon state line.

Four helicopters, 26 engines, five crews, four dozers and 324 people have been assigned to fight the fire.

CBS2 reports firefighters are patrolling the southern and western edges where the fire is contained, and are working around houses where embers might still be burning. The fire is spreading north and east, in a mosaic pattern, allowing for some vegetation to remain standing after the fire moves through.

“Structure protection remains a top priority,” according to fire officials.

Evacuations are in place for Seid Creek, East Pine/Pine Estates, Advent Gulch, upper Rush Creek, Cow Creek, Upper Dale, Paradise Flat, North Hornet, and West Mill Creek. Residents may be escorted in to care for animals.

If you need assistance, call the Washington County Sheriff’s Office at 208.414.2121 or the Adams County Sheriff at 208.253.4227. The Red Cross is also available at 800.853.2570 to assist evacuees.

The Council-Cuprum Road is closed at Mile Marker 12. Highway 71, between Cambridge and Gateway, is open to through traffic only.
