Coaching Carousel 2017

Coaching Carousel 2017

By Rick Worthington
Some CFB teams have already fired head coaches, following the final game of the season. Many of them even naming a new head coach before the last could even clear out his office.

It’s a sad reality of the College Football landscape. If you have a bad season, you are done.

While some have named our own Bryan Harsin as a candidate for other jobs, only time will tell if he really has any interest. I’m not going to fuel that fire.

I’m MUCH more interested in the hunt for a new head coach at Tennessee. Not because I have any care in the world for the Volunteers, but if you really want to see a hot mess – Tennessee is what you want to watch.

In a move nobody can really understand, the Volunteers fired Butch Jones, and before he even got out the door, Tennessee had an agreement in place with a new head coach. What is really entertaining is how they came to this conclusion.

The Vols were about to make a huge splash, and it was rumored they were recruiting John Gruden to return to the sidelines. In the end, he said “No”. Then they missed out on Mississippi State’s Dan Mullen, who went instead to rival Florida. (That one hurts)

With limited options, Tennessee went with former Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano. The problem here, Schiano used to work for Penn State during the time the whole Jerry Sandusky scandal went down. There are conflicting reports as to what Schiano did or did not know about the scandal, but even the mere idea that he might have known something was enought to make him too unpopular to hire….and so Tennessee backed away from the deal.

So, what now? Good question, and I have no idea. Who in the world would even want to step into that job now?

Nebraska needs a guy. Oregon State needs a guy. It’s fun to watch, only because I’m not a coach in need of my next gig.
