Random Thoughts of a News and Sports Junkie 6/26/17

**** Please note, this is not your usual article but instead, a collection of thoughts.  I don’t have a great deal to say about any one topic, but I do have a little something to say about many things.

— Last week I watched some of the first round of the NBA Draft.  I would watch more, but after the first couple of picks it’s pointless, more or less.  That’s because it’s nearly impossible to draft an all star or real impact player after the first handful of picks.  Let’s say your team is drafting 9th overall.  That is a good spot in the NFL or MLB drafts, but in the NBA it’s a sure way to continue to be a bad team with a pick that can’t really help you get better.  Meritocracy is a death sentence in the NBA.  Just ask the Utah Jazz, who are just good enough every year to stay decent, but never good enough to be a contender.

— Have you heard about the Han Solo movie that is being filmed?  This week the co-directors were fired, and Ron Howard was brought in to pick up the pieces and take over the project.  The reason the directors were fired (allegedly) is because they were adding too much humor to the film and it was becoming a comedy.  Bless you Walt Disney for firing those guys.  I think I’ve said before, I was Han Solo for a good portion of my childhood.  Turning his story into a chuckle-fest would have really angered me and I suspect a good deal of fans.

— I have gone through a series of personal trials over the last several months.  I may share another time what those trials are about, but for now I think I’d just like to say I’m really thankful for family and friends.  There are people who will stand with you and there are those who won’t.  My advise to you is to remember to surround yourself with the people who will.

— I’m throwing out the first pitch at the Boise Hawks game tonight.  My son (who is a pitcher for the Rocky Mountain High School team) is already trash talking me about throwing a strike.  He wants me to throw a breaking ball.  For fun, I may throw a knuckleball.  So, we’ll see how that goes.
