It’s Not Just About Pumpkin Spice

October has always been my favorite month. The heat of the summer is gone, and we actually have some weather to look forward to instead of a never ending stream of clear skies and warm days. October’s days often range into the 70s and even the low 80s. The nights are cool and toward the end of the month, temperatures can even dip below freezing sending us into “Indian Summer”.

October is also a great month for sports. Conference games are underway in football with bowl games on the line, and rivalries renewed. Basketball practice begins with the promise of a new season. Hockey usually gets rolling in the middle of the month as well. Then two of my favorite sporting events take place.

The Word Series is the premier event of  the month with a benefit this year because my Chicago Cubs have made the playoffs and are still in the mix. I have always said, I hope I live long enough to see the Cubs win the world series. Now I am worried that if they do, I might die. Hmmmm! Also the Breeders Cup in horse racing  takes place late in the month. For horse fanatics it is the World Series, Super Bowl and NCAA Basketball tournament wrapped into one two day event.

October is when you can start using your oven to cook big meals, Turkeys, Roasts and Pizzas are joined by cakes, cookies and homemade bread to make the house smell like Autumn. Did I mention, I love October.
