Start your Monday smart: What’s happening this week

(CNN) – President Trump is readying a big announcement. In four European countries, World Cup mania is reaching a fever pitch. And it’s not too soon to be nostalgic about the 2000s.

• The perilous mission to evacuate 12 boys and their soccer coach trapped deep inside a flooded cave in northern Thailand is expected to continue after authorities paused to refill the oxygen tanks that rescue divers are using. Four boys were successfully rescued Sunday.

• President Trump is expected to announce his nominee to replace retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy on the Supreme Court. This pick could have implications for decades on such hot-button issues as abortion, same-sex marriage and affirmative action. Confirmation hearings are expected this fall.

• A judge set this date as the deadline for reuniting immigrant kids younger than 5 with their parents. But the Department of Health and Human Services, which is responsible for caring for the separated kids, has offered only vague updates on the number of children who have been returned. And the Justice Department has signaled it may ask for extensions, saying DNA tests being used to confirm relationships take time.

• The World Cup’s Final Four kicks off with what could be a high-scoring matchup between European neighbors: France vs. Belgium.

• Speaking of Belgium, President Trump heads to Brussels for a NATO summit. Trump’s been demanding that our global allies pay more toward mutual defense and even sent letters last month to key allies threatening to shift the US military presence in Europe if they don’t pony up. Turns out this tactic has gotten European nations to spend more, NATO leaders say, though Trump’s belligerent approach — plus new tariffs — has boosted US-European tensions.

• The World Cup semifinals conclude with a battle of relative underdogs that few soccer experts predicted a month ago: Croatia vs. England.

• Nominees will be announced for the 70th primetime Emmy Awards. HBO’s “Game of Thrones,” NBC’s “This is Us,” Amazon’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” and Hulu’s “The Handmaid’s Tale” are all likely contenders. The ceremony broadcasts September 17 on NBC.

• Keep your rabbit’s foot handy — it’s Friday the 13th. The day could prove more annoying than ominous for President Trump, who will be in London to meet with Queen Elizabeth II and Prime Minister Theresa May. Protesters plan to greet him with a giant “Trump Baby” balloon.

• Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson barrels to a movie screen near you in “Skyscraper,” about a man trying to rescue his family from a tall building overrun with terrorists. It’s like “Die Hard” meets “The Towering Inferno.”

• Two of the world’s best women tennis players will meet in the Wimbledon singles final in London. Most of the top seeds have already been knocked out, but seven-time champ Serena Williams — 10 months after giving birth to a daughter — remains in contention.

Worthington BLOG: Take a deep breath Bronco Nation

Take a deep breath Bronco Nation Now is not the time to freak out. Yes, Boise State was beaten soundly by Oklahoma State, but hear me out. That is what usually happens when you travel to a top 25 ranked opponent. And, that should not make you believe the Broncos are not capable of…

BSU v OSU = A Family Rivalry

BSU v OSU = A Family Rivalry

I have a sister-in-law named Tami who lives in Tennessee.  She graduated from Oklahoma State University in the 1980’s, and this is why Boise State, my alma mater, must defeat Oklahoma State this weekend in football.  It’s not going to be the easiest thing to do, I’m guessing.  Oklahoma State is a member of the…

Beat the Cowboys!

Beat the Cowboys!

I’m going to make this short and sweet. Boise State has to knock off a couple of Cowboys in order for this to be a HISTORIC season for the Broncos. Boise State is currently ranked by the AP at #17 in the country. With a win over Oklahoma State on Saturday (if they win)…

What’s in a name?

What’s in a name?

I thought I was original.  Not quite, though.  On Saturday, the Boise State Broncos play the University of Connecticut Huskies at Albertson’s Stadium.  It’s a late game.  Kickoff isn’t until 8:15pm. I generally refer to the team as “Connecticut”.  A lot of other people call it “UConn”.  I’m not a huge fan of nicknames, cliches…
