SENATOR MIKE CRAPO, HUD SECRETARY BEN CARSON, BOISE LEADERS DISCUSS AFFORDABLE HOUSING

CALDWELL, Idaho (CBS 2) — U.S. Senator Mike Crapo invited U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Ben Carson and local Boise leaders to discuss affordable housing challenges in Idaho.

This may be in response to the price of Boise homes; it keeps rising.

The median price for a house in Ada County is now around $354,000, according to the Intermountain Multiple Listing Service (MLS). Five years ago, the median price was about $205,000.

“Addressing the housing affordability crisis requires innovative, outside-the-box approaches, as well as collaborative efforts at the local, state and federal level, and public/private partnerships,” explains a press release from Crapo.

Boise’s rent prices are also on the rise leading state and national averages.

“Housing affordability is a critical issue in Idaho and all across the country,” explains a press release from Crapo. “Nationwide, there is a shortage of millions of affordable rental homes available to lower-income Americans, and the gap between the demand for affordable homes and the supply of new ones being built increases each year.”
