Nampa murder trial moves forward

Two defendants in a Nampa teenager’s murder case said in court Wednesday they gave a false account to a grand jury in December.

A 16 year old boy – Roberto Gomez – was shot to death in Nampa on Sept. 25, 2018. Multiple people have been charged in the case, and this week another 16-year-old – Juan Menchaca Olvera – is on trial for charges of first-degree murder and robbery.

The Idaho Press reports, two of the other defendants in the case testified Wednesday that they lied to the grand jury to try to cover for Olvera.

Olivo earlier this month pleaded guilty to the three felony charges against him: accessory to willfully conceal or harbor a felon, witness intimidation and destruction of evidence.

Another defendant, Elizabeth Esparza, changed her story as well. She said she told the grand jury she didn’t see Olvera at all on Sept. 25 or hear him say anything about the shooting.

She testified Wednesday that she heard who she believed was Olvera saying he shot someone. She said she saw him holding a gun.

Olvera’s jury trial continues this week.
