Stabbing suspect undergoes mental health evaluation

On a judge’s orders, the man accused of stabbing a 74-year-old man in southeast Boise Thursday morning will undergo a mental health assessment as his case moves forward.

Ruben Diaz, who is charged with attempted murder, appeared in court Friday afternoon by video from the Ada County Jail.

The Idaho Press reports, a Judge set his bond at $1 million, in addition to ordering the mental health evaluation.

Police and prosecutors say Diaz attacked a man doing yardwork at his home. Diaz didn’t appear to live in the area, nor did it appear he knew the victim, who sustained serious injuries and was rushed to the hospital.

Diaz was on parole for aggravated battery at the time of the attack. He is next scheduled to appear in court Tuesday.
