West Nile turns up in traps in Canyon County

And then, there were two…counties, that is…that have confirmed cases of West Nile virus in mosquito traps.  Ed Burnett with the Canyon County Mosquito Abatement District says they noticed an uptick in Culex mosquitoes last week between Notus and Parma.

“We’d already started doing some operations there; we didn’t necessarily know that they were actually positive for West Nile at the time,” Burnett said.  “But our traps did reveal that we were seeing some of the spiking of the West Nile Virus vectors.”

Burnett says over-watering in rural areas can cause puddles of standing water which are breeding grounds of mosquitoes…get rid of them and don’t over-irrigate is his advice.  In town, be sure to change the water in birdbaths and pet dishes often.

West Nile has also turned up in Gem County.
